Contest 16: Winners Announced

In a massive contest of 33 entries, the quality of the competition was cut-throat. Many were impressively shot, alluringly composed, delightfully lit, and of course superbly built out of hundreds/thousands of Zen Magnets. Of the four that won, each are sharp and precise photos of interesting symettrical builds, lit without flash. And each of the winners happen to be practiced and accomplished contributors to the Zen Magnet Gallery.
By the way, Contest Poll Police Says: “When we ask you for your first, second and third favorite entry. Don’t be a vote stacking punk, and nominate the same one three times. The result is discarding the vote, and every other vote coming from that IP address ?_? “, Thanks Keepers Contest Peace and Fairness! How very informative!!

1st Place: musical_tesla_coils

This satisfyingly symmetrical arrangement is accurately positioned to see straight through one corner of the cube to the other. Thin depth of field asserts the size and scale of the sculpture, with each magnet reflecting a portion of the calm blue sky. The soft subunit itself is a harmoniously simple truncated tetrahedron, made from four rings of six, a total of 24 easy Zen Magnets per subunit. Another of the likely reasons this tasteful submission did so well in polls was because the thumbnail icon was so well framed: centered, sharp, eyecatching. The exquisitely high resolution upload was also a treat for anybody who clicked for the full size. This is musical_tesla_coils‘ first win in the competetive arena that is contest.zenmagnets.com, and likely not his last.

2nd Place: YoyoBandalore

If you haven’t noticed, YoyoBandalore has been either first or second place for every magnet sculpture photography contest for the past 7 contests. And by no accident, the presence of his quality is incredibly consistent. His approach, as previously characterized, is that of: high fidelity photography with strong contrast, innovative build ingenuity, great composure and framing through post processing. This shot is so symmetrical, that we would have guessed it to be mirrored along the center if not for the floating metal plates.

3rd Place: LeftCoastGal

LeftCoastGal is a relative newcomer to the contests and gallery, but her entries have been extremly strong the second she stepped into the magnet sphere scene. The sculpture, which has been referred to by others as and “exploding star flower”, is made of 18 clam-like cups. Each 20 magnet subunit seems to be a ring of 8 magnets attached to a ring of 10, with two to fill the center gap. The vibrant kaleidoscopic background almost seems to be radiating from the sculpture itself. Wonderful.

4th Place: GalaxyTraveler

GalaxyTraveler, another magnet sphere topliner, put forth a beautiful monochromesque montage of an eccentric, yet versatile subunit. The subunit itself is original, and is a puzzle to recreate without instruction. The photography is also superb. Firm contrast of reflective magnets on a black backdrop, yet soft lighting that drops a smooth formless shadow. Once we figure out how to create GalaxyTraveler’s unique subunit, we certainly have much experimentation to do ourselves.

And to those who took the time, energy and passion to submit an entry but did not win: You’re uncommonly awesome for having the courage to share a part of yourself with thousands of spectators. And keep in mind your photo still has a chance to win prizes if you submit to the Zen Gallery.

If you haven’t already, check out the many great submissions below.

Although there were 33 entries, not all of them followed the guidelines. Not only must the sculpture be built out of only one subunit, but the subunit must be visible in the image by itself. Thus, to be fair, only 28 entries will be eligible for prizes. Judges, also remember that this contest is a photography contest just as much as it is a magnet sculpture contest, overall aesthetic does matter.
